“to create awareness, disseminate education, counsel, develop innovate and promote methodologies, techniques, tools and technologies, like New Aids, Contemporary Methodologies, Latest Technologies, Educational Material/Library
Resources, Training Courses/Seminars, Vocational Practice, Psychological Counseling, Career Counseling and other strategies for the development of the disadvantaged, challenged, specially-abled, and/or differently-abled sections of the society, including backward sections like poor women, rural communities, economically disadvantaged, physically or mentally challenged, specially-abled, etc.”

Aug 31, 2017: Our team member, Amit, presented our work at the Lorentz Center Workshop in the Netherlands. The topic of the workshop was 'Included in Training and Work:
transforming policies and practices for disabled people'. Amit spoke about our work centered around inclusion and the importance of user-centered learning approaches for students with disabilities

2017 - 18: Program: English Fluency Training on for VI school students from Chandigarh (July 2017 - May 2019 for the total duration): ARISE Impact trained 9th grade to 12th grade students (batch size of 10 - 20 students over two years; one batch lasting 3 months) with partial/full visual disability of IFB (Institute for the Blind, Chandigarh) for about 2 years (from July 2017 - May 2019). Students were progressively trained on English language fluency as they graduated between classes. Having english language fluency enables students with disabilities to become eligible for more jobs which require English.

2018-2019
ARISE activities took shape formally with Indraprastha College for Women (IPCW), University of Delhi for training and support. In August 2018, a formal meeting was held with the Convenor of the Enabling Unit to propose training for PwD studying at IPCW. A Pilot programme was conducted between September 2018 to November 2018. This was subsequently was converted to a regular activity at Delhi.
1. Development of Curriculum and Training Content for VI & PH students
The training and professional development courses for students with disabilities were developed after 2000+ volunteer-hours of research and development each year, including 2018- 19 at ARISE Impact, with feedback from people with disabilities, Subject-matter experts and professional trainers. These courses are bilingual and also have experiential hands-on activity learning modules, and are utilized for ARISE Impact’s training programs.
2. Program: English Fluency Training on for VI school students from Chandigarh (Jan 2018 - May 2019… cont'd. from 2017 onward)
a) ARISE Impact trained 9th grade to 12th grade students with partial/full visual disability of IFB (Institute for the Blind, Chandigarh) for about 2 years (from July 2017 - May 2019). Students were progressively trained on English language fluency as they graduated between classes. Having english language fluency enables students with disabilities to become eligible for more jobs which require English.
b) The students were trained online every weekday using accessible Bilingual (Hindi- English) material prepared in-house by ARISE Impact. The topics included Conversational English, Grammar & Tenses, Word of the Day, Introducing oneself in english in-formal & informal setting & occasional career counseling of opportunities after schooling. We also shared inspirational stories of successful people-with- disabilities to motivate the students. Furthermore, ARISE Impact also conducted fun- learning activities in English, such as: GK & Indian History Quiz, Fact of the Day, Q&A about their favorite food, etc.
c) A total of about 10-20 female and male students with visual disabilities were present in the study groups at any point in time.
d) ARISE Impact team visited IFB atleast once/twice a month to have in-person workshops/ Q&A sessions with the students, familiarize the virtual instructors, conduct doubt clearing sessions, and help them use our courses on their school computers. The course ended in May 2019 with the last module of English Tenses.
e) Testimonials from students:
i) Student 1: “...learning new words is fun because I get to use it in the class and in front of my friends. Sometimes I get homework at school to write 5 new words with meanings. I directly refer to the ARISE Impact group and use those words as my homework and learn from them”
ii) Student 2: “I want to learn English because if you want to get a job/ do anything in life, English is very important. These days knowing English is a requirement for everything. I am weak in English and I wish to learn. People don't respect you if you don't know English. So I want to learn. I want to go abroad for studies”

Student Details: 5 visually-impaired (VI) students were trained
Content : Professional Introduction
Delivery Method : In-person & Online training
Outcome: After training, students with disabilities are now able to introduce themselves (in English and Hindi) with confidence and talk about their disability in a positive way in a professional / workplace / job / interview environment.
Students were awarded certificates by the Principal, IPCW, University of Delhi in February 2018.
Based on the success of the pilot programme the second batch was taken up with a regular number of students participating.
2019-2020
ARISE initiated its formal training activities with Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi in 2018 which continued with regular batches and were further strengthened with empowerment. The Second batch consisting of 30+ students completed their 2 months training in April 2019. Students were awarded certificates by the Principal, IPCW. Five students were successful in securing placements. Career-counselling workshop at the National Association for the Blind, in collaboration with Sahapedia was conducted in June 2019 and a discussion to establish a Project RISE in collaboration with Enabling Unit & Equal Opportunity Cell at IPCW was initiated in August 2019 and a team of 10 Volunteer members were inducted under Project RISE. Third batch of training from September – November 2019 was conducted with 30+ students and 10+ Students were taken to a Job Fair co-hosted by the Govt. of India. Fourth batch February to April 2020 was conducted with 20+ students. A stall was set up by students with disabilities at a fest held in IPCW, Delhi University in February and various handmade items were sold by the students with disabilities. Students also had various performances & games. Meetings were also held to establish collaboration with other colleges of Delhi University with ARISE Impact.

After training in Resume Building, students with disabilities are now able to understand and develop a resume for their application for jobs and also use the resume in professional settings and networking situations. By the end of this course, students can successfully create their resume in the correct format with all the necessary details.
c. After training in Interview-preparation, students with disabilities are equipped with the expertise required to look for a job with the necessary skills for job interviews. By the end of this course, they learn how to maximize verbal and nonverbal communication during the interview and how to be prepared for commonly asked interview questions.
Highlight: 5 students were successful in securing placements
Students were awarded certificates by the Principal, IPCW, University of Delhi in April 2019.
3. Program: A career-counselling workshop led by ARISE was conducted for the National Association for the Blind (NAB) students, in collaboration with Sahapedia.

Outcome : The objective was to remove inhibitions for women with disabilities to approach heritage spaces with an overall mission to accelerate inclusion of women with disabilities in the heritage and culture space and industry.

The content is divided into five parts: self-introductions, getting around campus, registering for courses, interacting with professors and classmates.
c. After training in Interview-preparation, students with disabilities are equipped with the expertise required to look for a job with the necessary skills for job interviews. By the end of this course, they learn how to maximize verbal and nonverbal communication during the interview and how to be prepared for commonly asked interview questions.

2020- Till date
ARISE activities got curtailed during the onset of COVID-19 where all its operations were taken online. The fourth batch which started in February 2020 with 20+ students concluded its second half online and four online webinars were organized in relevant areas. Two online training programmes of 2 months duration each were also conducted including the fifth batch at IPCW of 20+ and 15+ students.

3. Program: COVID-19 -related Webinar conducted on “How people with disabilities should protect themselves and stay safe during COVID-19”
Programme Name: 1.5 hours webinar & Q&A session with the doctor for teachers and students with disabilities hosted by ARISE

Details: The session also hosted Dr. Darshan from PGI, Chandigarh
Outcome : The session was successful in spreading awareness around the pandemic and sharing the necessary precautions that persons with disabilities must take.
4. Program: Online English Fluency training held for VI students across different colleges in Delhi Time: April 2020 - May 2020

Student Details: 5 students with visual disabilities from Kirori Mal College, Daulat Ram College were trained
Content: English Conversational Skills
Delivery: Online training with weekly webinar-based workshops
Outcome: After training in English Conversational, students with disabilities are now able to communicate meaningfully with their classmates, professors and the people they interact with in college. The content is divided into five parts: self-introductions, getting around campus, registering for courses, interacting with professors and classmates.
5. Program: Universally Accessible Webinar conducted on “Transforming your thinking for wellness and self-care as a PwD during COVID-19”

Details: The universally accessible session was attended by the students with disabilities, faculty, Vice-Principal of IPCW and public at large
Outcome : With sign language interpretation, the webinar was successful in impacting a wide range of disabilities and advocating for wellness in COVID times.

6. Program: ARISE’s first Internship program launched for students with disabilities Time: August 2020 - September 2020
Duration: 1 month
Details: 5 interns of student with visual disabilities were selected and trained in specific skills with online volunteer roles
Content: Interns were given weekly tasks that involved research, analysis, writing skills and using MS Office
Outcome : By the end of the internship program, interns had completed 6-week long rigorous training that involved working on MS Office and finishing tasks within given deadlines,
7. Program: Information session on Railways and NTPC jobs examination was conducted for students with disabilities led by ARISE

Details: The session was attended by 15 students with visual and physical disabilities across Delhi University
Outcome : The webinar observed various queries by the students with disabilities that attended the session. Their questions were answered, and they had much greater clarity on the two exams.
8. Program: Online Job Preparation training held for VI & PH students across different colleges in Delhi

10. Program: Information session on UPSC jobs examination was conducted with an IRS Officer who has a visual disability

Duration: 1 hour
Details: The session was attended by 18 students with disabilities across various colleges of University of Delhi
Outcome : The session observed participation from students with disabilities who were aspiring for UPSC exam. The QnA session with the IRS Officer was very insightful and guided students in their pursuits.
11. Program: Webinar held to celebrate Giving Tuesday India with a musical performance by person with a disability to advocate and create awareness around disability

Programs
Trainings - Resume building and Personal Interview
Knowledge of building a resume and dealing with personal interviews is highly relevant and increases the employability outcomes of students with disabilities.
Additional Courses
A self-driven initiative that seeks to raise inclusive skills and professional knowledge among students with disabilities.
Training in form of audio-based course modules on is provided to PwD to develop their confidence, language fluency and life skills.

Webinar and Trainings
During COVID, we provided bilingual audio courses to 79 students with disabilities from 18 colleges across India.
We also conducted ‘Envision 2021 - Reimagining the Future of Students with Visual Disabilities’, an event aimed at raising awareness about disability. An exciting quiz and interactive Q&A was held and the event was a big success!
